The College of Northern Canada Grand Opening

This week marked a significant milestone in the educational landscape of Northern Canada with the grand opening of a groundbreaking new college in downtown Yellowknife – The College of Northern Canada (CNC). This institution was born out of a recognition by decision-makers and elders of the unique educational needs of its Northern Canada communities. Our college stands as a nontraditional academic provider, dedicated to supporting lifelong learning for both residents and distant learners, with a special focus on serving the North.
The college has achieved its most substantial milestone this year with the establishment of its seven Centres of Learning and Continuing Education. Each centre operates within a defined scope, aiming to disseminate knowledge across three key components: courseware, conferences, and research. Notably, the institution has inaugurated the first Centre of Excellence in Logistics Learning in Northern Canada – endorsed by the Canadian Institute of Traffic and Transportation – setting a gold standard for logistics education in Northern Canada.
“This is not just a milestone for our institution,” stated the college president, “but an enormous opportunity for our Northern region to develop highly skilled and resilient workers and future leaders in transportation and logistics, among other critical industries.”
Under the scope of its Centre of Environment and Sustainability, the college has made remarkable strides. Within its first year, the institution was awarded a certificate of leadership for being one of the major organizers and sponsors of Africa’s first international SWAT Conference (Soil and Water Assessment Tool), promoting the use of the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) in managing global watersheds and water basins. This conference was championed by CNC President Dr. Chehrazade Aboukinane MSc., EMBA, PhD., P.Eng. GRICerfifiedSP – who served on its scientific committee.
In our ongoing commitment to academic excellence, scholarly engagement, and lifelong learning within the Northwest Territories, CNC is also proud to introduce two new scholarships this year in honour of its founding Elders, Norman Yakeleya and Tom Beaulieu. The Yakeleya Scholarship for Academic Excellence and Transformative Learning and the Beaulieu Scholarship for Professional Development, Research, and Scholarly Advancement will be awarded to Indigenous community members based on academic merit, diversity and inclusion, research experience, or specific professional experience.
These scholarships underscore our dedication to promoting educational opportunities and supporting the aspirations of Indigenous students in our region. Together, we will build a brighter, more inclusive, and resilient future for the North.

The College of Northern Canada is Pleased to Add an Additional Centre To Its Array of Educational Centres

“I commend the College of Northen Canada (CNC) and the Canadian Institute of Traffic and Transportation (CITT) for establishing the first Centre of Excellence in Logistics Learning in Northern Canada. This great initiative will serve as a catalyst to advance the priorities we formulated in the Northwest Territories (NWT) Transportation Strategy 2015-2040. The road, air, rail, and marine transportation systems play a critical role in the history and development of the NWT and continue to support sustainable communities and a growing economy into the future.”
Tom Beaulieu, Former Minister of NWT Transportation and CNC Indigenous Advisor.
“We are honoured to be recognized as the first Centre of Excellence in Logistics Learning in Northern Canada. As an enthusiastic environmentalist, I believe that providing world-class logistics education – tailored to the unique needs of northern and Indigenous communities – is an important way of protecting the environment, addressing various supply chain issues, and supporting self- governance and self-determination initiatives of Indigenous peoples across Canada.”
Dr. Chehrazade Aboukinane, Environment and Sustainability Expert and CNC President.
International experts gathered in Ifrane city in the Middle Atlas mountains, for the annual Soil & Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) conference that is being held for the first time in Africa.
From March 4-8, Morocco’s Al Akhawayn University in collaboration with the United States Department of Agriculture – Agricultural Research Service (USDA-ARS) and the Texas A&M AgriLife Research government agency, present the SWAT, a watershed-to-river basin model that simulates both ground and surface water quality and forecasts environmental effects of land use, management strategies, and climate change.
President of The College of Northern Canada, Dr. Chehrazade Aboukinane, has been selected to be part of the International Organizing Committee of the next SWAT Conference (Soil and Water Assessment Tool). Taking place in the picturesque mountain town of Ifrane, Morocco – from March 4th to 8th 2024 at Al Akhawayn University – it will be an extremely important gathering of international experts and institutions in the field of watershed and river basin management.
Originally developed by Texas A&M University’s AgriLife, SWAT is a powerful hydrological model designed for comprehensive watershed analysis. Among many other things, SWAT simulates the impact of land management practices and climate change on water quality, erosion, and agricultural productivity. This tool aids researchers, environmentalists, and policymakers in making informed decisions about watershed management, optimizing land use, and assessing the effectiveness of conservation strategies. It is the most widely used modeling software of its kind in the world – having been cited in over 6,000 peer-reviewed journals to date.
Dr. Aboukinane has been a long-standing member of the scientific committee for over 20 years given her extensive experience in environmental compliance, environmental assessment, project management, technical training, and academic leadership. CNC is extremely proud to have her lead its involvement in being one of the international organizers for this prestigious international conference.
CNC is immensely proud of our very own faculty member, Sasha Ramnarine, for being named a Forty Under 40 Award Winner by Business In Vancouver magazine (BIV).
