About NWT Needs

Logistics play a crucial role in addressing various challenges in the Northwest Territories (NWT), such as forest fires and the housing crisis. Effective logistics ensure timely responses to emergencies and facilitate sustainable development in remote areas. In 2023, NWT faced an unprecedented wildfire season, with over 70% of its residents being forced to evacuate, with more than four million hectares of forest burned over a six-month period, with fires reported all the way from the Beaufort Delta to the South Slave (ref. GNWT, Feb. 2024). Efficient logistics are essential for coordinating firefighting efforts, including the deployment of personnel, equipment, and resources to control and extinguish these fires.
Additionally, logistics are vital for managing the aftermath of wildfires, such as providing relief to displaced residents and rebuilding affected communities – communities like Enterprise, NWT, where a forest fire destroyed approximately 90% of all structures (ref. CBC, Aug. 2023). In this particular case, fires moved up to 75 kilometres in one day (ref. CBC, Aug. 2023). For extremely dangerous cases such as these, efficient and rapid logistical responses are essential for preventing loss of life and loss of infrastructure. As stated by Federal Emergency Preparedness Minister Harjit Sajjan, “We need to make sure that we work together at all levels of government, have mitigation adaptation take place to where we can prevent these things, have the appropriate response in place.
Various logistical solutions can be put into place to rebuild these affected communities. For instance, the use of mass timber technology has been proposed as a solution to both wildfire management and the housing crisis. Mass timber construction, which uses smaller-diameter wood that is often a byproduct of forest thinning, helps reduce wildfire risk by removing excess fuel from forests. This method not only aids in forest management but also speeds up the construction process for new housing. Projects using mass timber can be completed 49% faster than traditional builds, offering a rapid response to the housing shortages exacerbated by natural disasters (ref: CBS/KREM, Nov. 2023). However, solutions like this are only possible with sound logistical practices – such as those taught at the College of Northern Canada.
Moreover, logistics are integral to the ongoing efforts to address the housing crisis in NWT. The last published NWT Community Survey showed that 42% of all houses in the territory have at least one major problem (ref. NWT Bureau of Statistics, 2024). The region is experiencing significant housing shortages, with many communities lacking adequate and affordable housing. The implementation of transportation management software and fleet maintenance programs can improve the efficiency of transporting construction materials and supplies to remote areas. This is crucial for accelerating the development of new housing units and infrastructure, thereby alleviating the housing crisis.
Logistics in the Northwest Territories (NWT) is vital due to the region’s limited infrastructure and remote location. The sparse population and vast distances between communities make efficient logistics essential for ensuring the timely delivery of goods and services. The construction of the Mackenzie Valley Highway, for instance, highlights the importance of infrastructure development. This project aims to connect communities from Wrigley to Tuktoyaktuk, addressing logistical challenges by providing an all-season road that will significantly improve transportation reliability and reduce costs associated with seasonal ice roads and air transport (ref: Journal of Commerce/Construct Connect, Jan. 2023).”
